After Lalibela we went to the greatest kingdom of men in western Middle Earth. Actually, that would be Gondor, from the Lord of the Rings books by JRR Tolkien, which I am just getting into. We actually went to Gondar, in north-west Ethiopia, former capital of the country, and famous for its royal castles. It is also just a few hours from the Simian Mountain National Park, where my parents wanted to go hiking.
Before Gondar, we were quite lucky with the weather, with very little rain even though it was supposed to be rainy season. Local farmers were getting very worried at how late the rains were, and I was starting to feel bad for them even though the lack of rain made our adventures easier. Well the weather finally caught up with us. So even though we drove into the mountains, we were not able to go hiking or even see very much (see my mum’s guest post about the Roof of Africa coming up). Even when we toured the castles it was raining. But it was still cool. It’s good to be king.
